Team reveal: Tim Williams drops his Supercoach BBL14 squad

The Cooma Stallions have locked in their starting side for Supercoach Big Bash 14.



Well, by locked in I mean we’ve settled on a squad with copious variations to come between now and December 15.



I’ll update this article as changes are inevitably made in coming weeks, for now this is the squad I’ve landed on that I’m very happy with.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">STRATEGY</h2>



Firstly, I feel it’s necessary that I explain how I’ve come to land on my current squad.



Cash generation decisions are tough with such a short season, how important is it?



Then there’s the importance of looping, it’s a very tactical game.

I’ve found that the nature of the draw for BBL14 makes Supercoach tricky early on.



What I’ve found is that with only three byes for the season, and none until round 3, it’s very difficult have strong early cash generation and maximal looping opportunities.



Either you pick a deep squad with active players to ensure cash generation occurs to maximise squad value, or you opt for two or three non-playing reserves to enable looping opportunities.



As someone who has leant heavily into cash generation in the past, I found this a particularly tough call.



Further to the cash generation and deep squad route, it also enables owning a few extra double game week players to maximise scoring opportunities.



For now, I’ve leant into attacking the loophole route by selecting two non-playing reserves (players who are very unlikely to get picked in their team’s XI).



The reason being is the very short nine round season, I feel there’s a need to go hard early, get on top of the rankings and then cling on.

If you attack cash generation in such a short season, reducing looping opportunities, I feel it could back-fire quickly.



I’m going on the attack.



I have $115,300 in my bank which is reserved for Matt Short in round 2.



A further note that the first game of the season will dictate many mid-round trades to start the season.



For example, if Josh Inglis can score well in the first game of the tournament I’ll loop him in the WKP slot and likely drop Tim Seifert.



Anyway, hopefully that all makes sense, let’s get into my team.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">WKP</h2>



Josh Inglis $140,600



The WKP slot is fairly grim, so I’m happy to lock in the class of the position in Inglis ahead of the Scorchers double in round 2.



Playing in the opening game I’ll sit him on my bench, and if he fails I’ll shift Tim Seifert up into the slot if needed.



Inglis is in the Australian squad, but won’t play barring injury to Alex Carey.



If there’s any doubt over him getting released to play I’ll reassess my options.



Jake Doran $39,500



I’ve got Doran in to enable the WKP loop and batting loop throughout the season.



Recent domestic form has me wary of a call-up for the Hurricanes, but for now it looks safe.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">BATTERS</h2>



Beau Webster $164,700



The injury to Glenn Maxwell is only going to help Beau Webster’s Supercoach prospects.



If Maxwell is ruled out of the opening fixtures, Webster should be locked in to bat top four and it’ll also increase his prospects of bowling.



He has a big ceiling and has class on his side, locked in with two early double game weeks.



Will Sutherland $132,600



Sutherland is under an injury cloud but has confirmed recently his aim is to be back and bowling for the BBL opener.



If cleared, he should bat at number seven and bowl regularly, it’s a great role.



He’s far from locked in, but provided the injury reports are sound leading in I’ll be keen.



He may also be the man to move to Matt Short in round 2.

Tim Seifert $152,000



Seifert is a Kiwi international star who has the potential to light up the BBL.



I’m never overly keen on internationals in their first BBL stints, but the key to his selection in my team is to have three WKP options to utilise the loop.



If Inglis scores well in game one I’ll likely drop him out of my team before the Renegades play.



Tom Curran © $152,000



Probably my first player picked and very likely my vice-captain for round 1.



Marcus Stoinis $84,200



I wanted to avoid Stoinis after a string of underwhelming seasons, but like Homer Simpson with a mouldy old sandwich, he just keeps finding his way back.



I was going to leave him out but the injury to Maxwell is significant for Stoinis’ SC prospects.



He may bat a slot higher, and his bowling prospects increase.



He also recently bowled death overs for Australia in the T20 series.



At $84k with dual position and five games in the opening three rounds I’ve changed my tune, get him in, but manage expectations carefully.



Aaron Hardie $177,800



Hardie has the round 2 double, recently bowled with plenty of success for Australia against Pakistan, and is taking his cricket to new levels.



Add in the Scorchers playing the opener which makes him a perfect loop, I love going early on him.



Let’s just hope there’s no shock Test call-up…



Will Salzmann $39,500



A second non-playing reserve with dual BAT-BWL positioning.



Between Salzmann and Doran I’ll have looping opportunities across every position.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">BOWLERS</h2>



Kane Richardson $97,900



Richardson has been among the elite of Supercoach for many years, despite playing in abysmal Renegades teams.



Now there’s no certainty they’ll improve, but if they can better themselves in BBL14 it’ll give their key death bowler far more opportunities to take wickets.



With two doubles in the first four rounds, I’m willing to take a very minor punt on the injury-riddled star at a bargain price of $98k.



Adam Zampa $80,100



Lock and load, move on.



Hamish McKenzie $69,400



Obviously selection pending, but McKenzie looks likely to feature for the Stars which has been further enhanced by Usama Mir’s unavailability until December 26.



He’s cheap and can benefit from the strong early Supercoach draw.



At just $69k he doesn’t need to do much to justify his selection.

Henry Thornton $98,100



Wes Agar has left the Strikers which should help cement Thornton’s regular position in the team, while bowling at the death.



The Strikers have a brilliant draw that shouldn’t be ignored despite starting on the single game week.



They have the double in round 2 and 4, so I’m confidently stock piling a few of their key players.



Jamie Overton $207,700



The English quick was a revelation for the Strikers last season and is likely to again feature prominently in BBL14.



After missing a string of action mid-year through injury, he returned for England in white ball cricket with success.



I’d be wary of starting without both he and Matt Short as it’s a lot of cash to find for round 2 for two players that will more than likely be must-haves.



Jhye Richardson $130,000



Richo is coming off his poorest BBL season in a long-time, and he starts cheap as a result.



You can toss a coin as to which Scorchers quicks you’ll want to own for their round two double, or you can just select the player with the best record at the lowest price!



Injury and rotation is a genuine risk, but it’s one I’m willing to take for a player I’ll inevitably be buying in round 2.



Jordan Buckingham $39,500



Supercoaches are crossing their fingers and toes that Buckingham is cleared for the Strikers opening fixture.



He’s battling injury at the moment and is in major doubt.



If fit he’s a strong chance to bowl the death overs and he’s bottom dollar in Supercoach.



If available he should be owned by all serious Supercoaches.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">FLEX</h2>



Mark Steketee $79,100



I feel like Steketee is being slept on at 6.7% ownership at just $79k with the early double game weeks.



He has plenty of experience and boasts a respectable Supercoach pedigree.



He’s likely to bowl death overs for the Stars and therefore looks a great early POD play to me.
