Final word: Captains, weather forecast, POD watch Rd 5

Supercoach Big Bash round 5 has arrived, tthe first week of the Single Game weeks.



Hopefully you&#8217;ve navigated the early doubles well, built that team value and acquired those all-rounders which we know can help us lift our floor in these tricky single game weeks. 



Becuase as the two-time champ Andrew Langley puts it, this really is a new SuperCoach season.



Tim Williams is flying and up to 148th overall. Langley pacing the contributors in 109th while the rest of the gang are lingering just inside or outside the Top 1k.



Personally my team has struggled and sits in 1500th overall &#8211; it&#8217;s a fine spot to be but easy to reflect where the payoffs haven&#8217;t happened on some punts taken. But with a smorgesboard of all-rounders and death bowlers I feel well positioned to attack this next period.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Looking ahead</h2>



All teams have a single game week in Round 5, and only the Thunder and Hurricanes have any doubles remaining.



The Adelaide Strikers are also on the bye in Round 6, while the Melbourne Stars also have the bye in Round 8. It doesn&#8217;t mean those players are sells either, as some of the best players can be used strategically as loops if you play your cards right.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Super PODs</h2>



In the Final Word, we’ll look at the super POD options, the players at under 5% ownership (among the top 10% ranked coaches) that could send you soaring (or falling) up the overall ranks.



They come with big risk, but the reward is immense if it comes off.



Last week, Ben McDermott was solid at 1.5% ownership, scoring 44 points on the single and still sitting with a breakeven of -10.



Lance Morris &#8211; 2.2% ownership



Perth are done with the doubles but enter an interesting two-game stand at home.



And we know they&#8217;re a club who play their home conditions very well.



Morris&#8217; pace and bounce can trouble opponents at Optus Stadium. And with a game against the Thunder then Renegades on his home deck, now could be the time to take a punt on the Wild Thing.



Morris already has a low breakeven of just 6. At worst he will make cash for you as a short-term play. 



Best case is you capitalise on a low ownership POD.



For what it&#8217;s worth, Lockie Ferguson is at lower ownership and has a double next round which is also appealing.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Captains</h2>



Looping is crucial in a single game week. And the order of matches is what you need to pay attention too.



With forecast concerns for the first match of the round I am avoiding a Sixer or Heat target and instead looking at the Perth vs Thunder game.



In that match I like the VC on Cooper Connolly. He&#8217;s batting in the Top 4 and has bowled in all but one match so far. 



With some concerns over the fitness of Ashton Agar, he could be the primary spinner too pending their lineup. 



Realisitcally any player from that match could be your VC &#8211; Wes Agar, Behrendorff, Sams, Warner. It&#8217;s all good.

Because the best news is the best SuperCoach player in the game &#8211; Jamie Overton &#8211; is playing the final match of the round.



He&#8217;s an obvious C option if your VC goes under 55.



Of course, pending who your loop player is will define when you need to take it by. If you&#8217;re using Jake Doran he plays the final game of the Round so you could even take a VC in the Stars vs Gades derby.



So pending the performance of the Sixers in Round 1 &#8211; namely my keeper option &#8211; which defines my use of Doran, I will either aim for Cooper or Stoinis.
