Thommo's takes: SC BBL14 Round 5 wrap up

Welcome to our review article at SC Playbook where we review the action from the previous round and see what impact it had on our side and what we can learn from it. \



The&nbsp;first round where all teams were on single games for the round. It was also&nbsp;the first round where weather impacted upon the BBL and we had a game abandoned without a ball being bowled. Decisions were&nbsp;needed to be made by supercoachers about who to keep with rain around. 



This was a real moving round I think where coaches who were able to get some good scores and avoid poor oneshad a rankings rise. 



Additionally coaches who were able to field decent numbers were also at an advantage&nbsp;of&nbsp;a good score, because many were scrapping the bottom of the&nbsp;barrel&nbsp;to even field full numbers, let alone try and loop some scores.&nbsp;

<li>Changes for both sides coming into this fixture.&nbsp;For the home side,&nbsp;Spoors and Kelly were in for Agar and Richo. One change&nbsp;for the Thunder with Nikitaras in for Davies (well sort of). There was a scary incident in the match when Bancroft and Sams collided heavily with each other when chasing a high ball.&nbsp;Both were then substituted out of the match with Davies&nbsp;and Weigben replacing them. Best wishes and speedy recovery to both fellas in what was a nasty moment.</li>
</ul>







<ul>
<li>The Thunder are the team on the double next round, so they are of major interest for us supercoachers.</li>
</ul>







<ul>
<li>Warner again followed up his knock last game, making 49 runs. Obviously a bat only but he looks in reasonable&nbsp;touch leading up to a double. One to consider for sure.</li>
</ul>







<ul>
<li>Anyone who likes allrounder types or bowlers who usually get a bat&nbsp;and went early on Chris Green will be tremendously pleased with the result. 3 wickets a tidy spell and 113 SC points. He will probably be the most traded in player&nbsp;next round.</li>
</ul>







<ul>
<li>One Thunder player who was heavily traded in this round was Wes Agar. Of course it was typical SC for him to score only 4 points. He still bowled the right overs and should score well over the upcoming double.&nbsp;</li>
</ul>







<ul>
<li>Rutherford is not a bowler, but he can bat as he guided the Thunder home for victory.</li>
</ul>







<ul>
<li>The other player who has peaked some interest for me after the Thunder played is Gilkes. Promoted to number 3&nbsp;and he made&nbsp;43 runs. He just missed activating the strike rate bonus, but he is keeper&nbsp;eligible&nbsp;position wise,&nbsp;very cheap and may have a promoted role. Could be the answer for some who are searching for one?</li>
</ul>







<ul>
<li>Allen (like Warner) has strung two innings in a row. 113 SC points as he achieved maximum strike rate bonus again.&nbsp;No doubles but in form and cheap and congratulations to those that looped him on this week with two home games in a row. Eyes up supercoaching!</li>
</ul>







<ul>
<li>The Wild Thing again showed he performs well at Optus with&nbsp;98 SC points.</li>
</ul>







<ul>
<li>No Agar meant 5th&nbsp;bowler duties were shared amongst&nbsp;Spoors, Turner and Cooper. Cooper picked up a wicket too!</li>
</ul>







<ul>
<li>Connolly was again at number 4 but continued his form making 43 not out off 31 deliveries and finished with 76 SC points. A great player to have in the single game rounds.&nbsp;</li>
</ul>







<ul>
<li>One for later this tournament or certainly for next years BBL in former gunHardie. He is getting very cheap. If he strikes form with the bat or starts to bowl he could be a great trade in&nbsp;even with no more Perth doubles.&nbsp;</li>

Stars&nbsp;vs&nbsp;Renegades



Result:&nbsp;Stars won by 5 wickets

<li>Numerous changes for the Renegades as they looked to recapture some of their early season form. In for them were&nbsp;Sandhu, Wells and Crone, Out&nbsp;were Fergus, Harvey and Richo. </li>
</ul>







<ul>
<li>Some on the ins were great for the Gades. Gurinder took 3/29 off his 4 overs and Jono Wells did Jono Wells things making 45 off 31 in the middle order for the Renegades.&nbsp;</li>
</ul>







<ul>
<li>Stars unchanged from their first&nbsp;victory&nbsp;of the season.&nbsp;</li>
</ul>







<ul>
<li>Bethell the allrounder? Have we&nbsp;seen a role shift over the last two games. He bowled 3 overs for 19 and made some runs&nbsp;batting at his usual number 4 role (49 off 36 balls).&nbsp;Add in a cheeky run out as well as some catches&nbsp;and a great score of 111 SC in a single round for owners.</li>
</ul>







<ul>
<li>5th&nbsp;bowler duties shared between Stoinis and Lawrence. Both were expensive and wicketless in this one. No overs again for Maxy.</li>
</ul>







<ul>
<li>Best bowlers for the Stars were&nbsp;Paris and Siddle who both took two wickets. They are actually looking like a settled and decent bowling unit now.</li>
</ul>







<ul>
<li>Duckett is&nbsp;an&nbsp;underrated and underappreciated answer to the wicket&nbsp;keeper position/problem&nbsp;for the year.&nbsp;Yes&nbsp;he didn’t play till round 2, yes he wasn’t the cheapest,&nbsp;yes he doesn’t even take the gloves for the Stars,&nbsp;yes he has scored two ducks, but his other SC scores are 123, 87 and then&nbsp;another 87 in this game by scoring 67 runs off 49 balls.</li>

<li>It was Duckett’s partnership with Stoinis that set up victory for the Stars. Stoinis with 48 runs off 35 balls, his score could have been even higher but his strike rate stalled as his innings progressed. He still looks like a great hold with his form with the bat and the fact he is rolling the arm over now.&nbsp;</li>
</ul>







<ul>
<li>Maxy and Hilton Cartwright finished off the chase for the Stars in quick time and&nbsp;importantly&nbsp;both got to 20 to activate maximum strike rate bonuses!</li>
</ul>







<ul>
<li>Role was there was Chief, just no SC scoring&nbsp;only 16 SC points.&nbsp;</li>
</ul>







<ul>
<li>JFM will be cheap to end this season and is a start for next season. One player I am keen on starting next season, even though this season is only&nbsp;halfwaythrough!</li>
</ul>



Hurricanes&nbsp;vs&nbsp;Strikers



Result:&nbsp;Hurricanes&nbsp;won by 5 wickets

<li>Captain Nathan back for the men in purple. Hatz was omitted. No changes for the Strikers. Still no Matt Short.</li>
</ul>







<ul>
<li>Lynn opened that batting again and continued on his form making&nbsp;49 runs off 27 deliveries.&nbsp;He copped a nasty blow to the back of his helmet during his knock too.&nbsp;</li>
</ul>







<ul>
<li>Overton scored points with the bat&nbsp;by activating the strike rate bonus. He did not score many bowling points as Owen and then David smacked him to all parts. It does again remind us of the value of all rounders because if they have an off night in one aspect of the game, they can still score in another.</li>
</ul>







<ul>
<li>2 overs for Chaudhary, sharing 5th&nbsp;bowling option with Waqar.&nbsp;He scored 22 runs but did not activate a strike rate bonus.&nbsp;</li>
</ul>







<ul>
<li>Mitch Owen is cheapie of the year as he made quick fire runs again to get the Canes off to a flyer. He&nbsp;could&nbsp;be too expensive for non owners come their double in round 8 at this rate.</li>
</ul>







<ul>
<li>In good news for future owners, all Hurricanes bowlers did not score&nbsp;big SC wise, keeping their prices affordable moving forward as we eye them off for their round 8 double. Meredith, Ellis and CJ all scoring under 40 SC.&nbsp;&nbsp;</li>
</ul>







<ul>
<li>Tim David doing&nbsp;what he hasn’t done since BBL 2022 and&nbsp;scoring over 50 runs at his usual explosive strike rate. Seems like a trap moving forward, even in a double game week.</li>
