BBL Supercoach | Buy, Hold, Sell – Round 7

The home stretch is here, and the last double for two more clubs is upon us.



We’ve seen some solid scoring again this round for teams on the double, aided by a lot of wickets falling in the Sixers first game.



Difficult conditions for batters also saw some big Supercoach hauls for some targets from the Strikers and Renegades, so well done to anyone who went early!



We are here to talk Double Game Week targets once more, but before we do, here’s my obersations from Round 6.



What we’re seeing:

<li>Besides all-rounders, death bowlers remain key for BBL Supercoach. Huge hauls this past round to the likes of Gurinder Sandhu (two rounds in a row), Wes Agar and Jamie Overton showed us once more the value of the role.</li>



<li>Keep your eye on the team changes coming. We’re seeing some changes in role as some players depart for rep duties, and we’re also about to welcome back the Test players in the fold. There’ll naturally be winners and losers.</li>



<li>Adelaide Oval and Optus Stadium aren’t the batter-friendly tracks we are used to. Both grounds have a lower first innings average than seasons past and are offering a lot to the bowlers.</li>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Double game strategy</h3>



There are two teams on the double this round, but a huge twist for coaches &#8211; they face off in the first game of the round.



That means instead of being able to take a VC loop and skipper from the second team, you’ll need to hedge your bets in the first game and may only use a VC loop in case of an injury.



There’s also no ‘safe’ VC loops with no team on the bye. 



We could see some huge swings based on captaincy this week!



As a rule of thumb, when the teams on the double face off, it can diminish the overall returns as we do not typically see success from both teams in the same match.



So coaches might have to hedge their bets in this round and pick players from the side they think will perform best, and not just load up on Double Game Week players for the sake of it.



It’s also worth noting the expected impact of the Test match players returning to their squads. 



Between Alex Carey and Beau Webster, there are moving parts for both sides on the double.



That’s also before we consider the impact of the expected returns of Steve Smith, Marnus Labuschagne and Josh Inglis on other popular and highly owned players like Josh Philippe, Jack Wildermuth and Aaron Hardie.



The final factor to consider is that with limited time left in the game, anyone you bring in now might be in your side for the long haul. 



So try and be comfortable with the players you want being ‘playable’ in single game weeks &#8211; in that sense, this round is as much about the ‘avoids’ as it is the ‘buys’.

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Buy</h3>



Matt Short &#8211; BAT/BWL



Not only an all-rounder, but a very good player too. 



Likely to be the highest-captained player this round. 



His bowling has been a little inconsistent this year, but he’s a gun.



Jamie Overton &#8211; BAT/BWL



Arguably the best POD captain this round. Has a huge role to play in the success of the Strikers. 



He has 3 scores over 100, and 3 scores under 40. 



So his consistency hasn’t been perfect, but if anyone could match Matt Short, it could be him.

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Consider</h3>



Liam Scott &#8211; BAT/BWL



Batting middle order, and bowling at least one per game. 



It’s a decent role, but it’s not a hugely consistent one. 



Scott has the ceiling that you could gamble on it, as there should be a good floor. 



But just don’t expect the world.



Mitch Owen &#8211; BAT/BWL



In any other double game week, he’d be in the ‘buy’ category, and it’s going to be scary not to own, but you don’t have to. 



Owen has been bowling an over or two in a lot of games, but Beau Webster’s expected return in the second game of the double might diminish that. 



It’s a high risk role so buyer beware.



Luke Wood &#8211; BWL



Sneaking along with an average just under 60 prior to this round, thanks to a great role bowling death.

Nathan Ellis &#8211; BWL



The Hurricanes best bowler, but not a consistent Supercoach prospect, thanks largely to how good he is at bowling defensively (great for not conceding runs, not great for wicket-taking). 



He’s still a good guy to consider as a captain, but not a ‘must’ in the traditional sense.



Chris Jordan &#8211; BWL



Having a quiet period after a solid start to the tournament. 



Jordan has moved between batting 7 and 8, which has hindered him slightly, albeit it’s the lack of wickets of late, which is interesting. 



Still has a good enough role and is cheap enough to gamble on.



Lloyd Pope &#8211; BWL



Has a huge haul in him from time to time. 



Rocks or diamonds, but is usually trusted to bowl his full allotment. 



A good point of difference to target.



Nikhil Chaudhary &#8211; BAT/BWL



Not boasting the kind of role you’d traditionally target as a number 5 whose not bowling, but Chaudhary’s form is undeniable. 



He’s a genuine chance to wear the yellow cap as the leading run scorer. 



Not the role for me, but you could take a punt.

Gurinder Sandhu &#8211; BWL



Back-to-back four-wicket hauls have Gurinder as the leading wicket taker in the competition &#8211; is this BBL15 or BBL05?!



Sandhu has won a death bowling role at the Renegades and has been scoring brilliantly all season. 



Before his 111 this round, he recorded scores of 107, 71, 41, 27 and 47. 



That’s awesome stuff!



Hassan Khan &#8211; BAT/BWL



We’ve called out his name in this article several times already, and the Pakistani allrounder is working his way into the tournament nicely.



His bowling seems to finally have won the confidence of his skipper, and he’s been named to bat at 5 in the last two matches for the Renegades, giving him one of the best roles in the game. 



He won’t come cheap anymore, but he is worth considering going early on with the Renegades double coming in Round 8.



If Adam Zampa returns, his role might diminish slightly, but his upside is huge.



His price is also likely to keep people away from him when the double does eventuate. 



In just 1.1% of teams in the Top 10%!



Will Sutherland &#8211; BAT/BWL



The Big Chief is always worth talking about when the double gets near. 



And he’s finding some form at the right time.



Crucially, he’s bowling some surge and death overs now for the ‘Gades, which lifts his scoring opportunities.

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Avoid</h3>



Hassan Ali &#8211; BWL



A good player, but now bowling the right overs and a rotation risk due to the Strikers having four Internationals.



Tabraiz Shamsi &#8211; BWL



Same as above &#8211; Shamsi and Ali are arguably competing for one spot and will rotate based on conditions.



Tim Ward &#8211; BAT



A risk to miss selection in Game 2 if Jake Weatherald is welcomed back into the fold. 



Has a nice breakeven and could hol,d but not the type of player you’d want to get stuck with.

Jerrssis Wadia &#8211; BAT/BWL



Had his moment earlier this season but has an absolutely shocking role for Supercoach as a bit part bowler and late order batter. 



Avoid, and even if you own, consider sitting. 



Could even be dropped to welcome back Carey.



Rehan Ahmed &#8211; BAT/BWL



Had some appeal as a top-order bat, but now becomes a bit-part player with the presence of Webster likely to eat into his overs. 



Cheap for a reason.



Mackenzie Harvey &#8211; WKT/BAT



Could earn dual this round, but he&#8217;s a chance to miss selection with Alex Carey expected to come into the side.



Will Prestwidge &#8211; BWL



Was noted in the commentary last match that despite taking two wickets in his first over, is only going to be used sparingly. 



Don’t be sucked in!

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">My Trade and skipper plans</h3>



A lot of what happens will depend on the outcome of the Sixers vs Stars matchup this evening, but as it stands, I will try stash as many Sixers as possible to help me have maximum double game week coverage in Round 9 when they’re the only club on the double.



With Matt Short in my team, Hobart on the bye in Round 9 as well, I want to invest sparingly.



I’m happy to sell Aaron Hardie, who has done a job as a cheapie. 



With Inglis returning, I expect him to drop down to number 7 in the order, and he’s already sharing bowling overs, so his returns could diminish.



At my rank, I need points of difference to climb, and he will fund the purchase of my Round 8 trump (which most won’t be able to afford) in Gurinder Sandhu. 



If I can afford to sell an injured Joe Clarke instead of a fit player, I will.
